High-intensity Lasers in Nuclear Science

چکیده

Recent developments in high intensity lasers open up a new approach to investigating nuclear reactions in the laboratory without access to nuclear reactors or particle accelerators. By focusing the laser spot, very high laser intensities in excess of 10 W cm can now be produced. Under these conditions, matter in the focal spot is turned into hot dense relativistic plasma. The laser interactions with solid or gas targets can generate collimated beams of highly energetic electrons and ions. The possibility of accelerating electrons to energies over 200 MeV in such experiments led to the utilization of high-energy bremsstrahlung radiation in order to investigate laser-induced gamma reactions. Laser-induced activation, transmutation, fission and fusion have been demonstrated with both single pulse giant laser systems and laboratory tabletop laser systems.

Femtolasers and High-intensity Laser-matter Interactions

Contents 1. Summary Femtolasers arose owing to the mode-locking technique which allowed producing laser pulses of femtosecond duration. The invention of the chirped pulse amplification and the development of high-fluence laser gain media and large-aperture nonlinear crystals made it possible to amplify femtosecond laser pulses to unprecedented powers, in excess of petawatt. A tight focusing of ...

Modulation Response and Relative Intensity Noise Spectra in Quantum Cascade Lasers

Static properties, relatively intensity noise and intensity modulation response in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) studied theoretically in this paper. The present rate equations model consists of three equations for the electrons density in the conduction band and one equation for photons density in cavity length. Two equations were derived to calculate the noise and modulation response. Calcula...

Study of Geometrical-Dependence of Glow Discharge on Gain Coefficient in a TE-N2 Laser

Based on a set of experiments, using a transversely exited (TE) oscillator-amplifier N2-laser system (OSC-AMP) with the AMP effective length of 31cm, measurements have been carried out for small signal gain, g0, and saturation energy density, Es, for different AMP gap separations. It was found that the gain-value depends on the AMP electrode gap separation, d<su...
